Sukriti's Medical History
Sukriti turned 10 years old on August
3rd 2002 and celebrated her 10th birthday at a party with
her friends in New Delhi, India. Less than a month later on Sep 14th
2002, this happy, healthy little girl was diagnosed with a life threatening
bone marrow failure disease called Acute Myeloid Leukemia (or cancer
of the blood). This is a disease in which there is an overproduction
of immature myeloid white blood cells (blast cells).

Until the diagnosis, Sukriti had
enjoyed ten years of perfect health. Her daily routine at school
mirrored that of other students going to school: preparing for
classes, studying for exams, meeting friends, participating in
quizzes, debating. Inspired by her mother and father, who are
both practicing doctors, Sukriti has
plans of becoming a doctor herself.
An inspiration to all her friends
at such a young age, Sukriti fought the cancer with fierce
determination, a sense of humor, and a resilient spirit. In May
2003, after enduring several rounds of chemotherapy, Sukriti was
declared cancer-free. She started going to school again, playing
with friends and her little brother Ishan. However,
during a routine blood test on Oct 19, 2004, it was discovered
that her Leukemia was back.

Dreaming
a Future

Doctors
say that her best chance for surviving this relapse is an aggressive round
of chemotherapy, followed
by an unrelated
stem-cell transplant as she doesn't have
a matched sibling donor. Healthy stem-cells from donor blood will be inserted
into her body to regenerate healthy blood cells. This, after her own blood
cells have been destroyed by chemotherapy. Her situation is compounded
by the fact that unrelated transplants are
not performed in India and entail significant expenses (in the
range of $150K - 300K) in US/UK/Singapore. It is not an easy road that
Sukriti and her family need to traverse.
Presently, Sukriti
is an inpatient at Rajeev Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre,
a leading cancer hospital in Delhi and is recovering from a round of
intensive chemotherapy. She needs a bone marrow
transplant as soon as she goes back into remission, which could be as
soon as 6-8 weeks.
Sukriti is looking
forward to going back to school, meeting friends, becoming a doctor!
We make this appeal to each of you to save a life that holds hope and
promise for the future.
You can help Sukriti realize her dreams by
helping her raise funds for the treatment and getting yourself tested
at a bone marrow drive or at the local NMDP center.
