Sukriti Current Status
Sukriti underwent a cord blood transplant on Thursday, April 28 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. Although the path to complete recovery is still difficult, this is an important milestone and wouldn’t have been possible without our donars & supporters. We’d like to express our heartfelt gratitude for you all and best wishes for Sukriti.

She is currently maintaining good overall health and will be in Singapore for the next 3-4 months for follow-up care. This time right after the cord blood transplant will be the most critical in determining the success of her transplant. She’ll suddenly experience a drop in her platelet counts as the donor cells begin to grow and develop (engraftment - When donated stem cells begin to grow and develop in a recipient, the cells are said to engraft).

This is an important milestone for a transplant recipient because it means that the donated stem cells are forming new stem cells and a new immune system capable of fighting off infections. Until engraftment occurs, a recipient is very vulnerable to infections caused by viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Because of the smaller number of stem cells in a typical Cord blood unit (CBU), cord blood transplant recipients generally take about one week longer to engraft than marrow recipients. Thus, cord blood transplant recipients may have more complications caused by infections.

Another potential issue is the inability to obtain a second donation if that becomes necessary. When a marrow recipient experiences graft failure (non-engraftment) or a relapse (return) of his or her disease, doctors can often treat this with a second donation from the original marrow donor. This option is not available to a cord blood recipient because the donor of the CBU cannot make a second donation.

However, at this point we are glad that we’ve reached this milestone and are hopeful that Sukriti will respond appropriately to the transplant.

We will keep you all updated on the progress of our efforts.
